Gugulethu
Street Renaming

About Us

The City of Cape Town launched a public participation process on 1 November 2012 obtain proposals for the renaming of 91 'NY-prefixed' streets in Gugulethu. The City has reviewed the thousands of names submitted for these streets and has proposed new names for comment.

It is now your turn to provide comment on the proposed names, but simply clicking on the "Have your say" tab and choosing any street from the drop-down menu. It's that simple to have your say.

This is your opportunity to support names which you deem most suitable via this website. Otherwise look out for the teams distributing pamplets througout Gugulethu. The final decision on the renaming of streets in the city vests with Council, acting on the advice of the Executive Mayor as assisted by the Naming Committee.

"The renaming of the NY streets in Gugulethu is an opportunity for community building and we encourage all residents to participate in this exciting process. With this renaming project we have the chance to eliminate symbols of the painful apartheid approach to planning and we empower residents to build a suburb with diginified place-markers," said the Chairperson of the Naming Committee, Councillor Brett Herron.
